Formability of Friction Stir Welded AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheets

2010

The formability of friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets was investigated by means of uniaxial tensile and hemispherical punch tests performed under different process conditions. The results of the tensile tests were analysed in terms of flow stress and ductility at different temperature and strain rate; the hemispherical punch tests, carried out at different temperatures, provided the limiting dome height. The formability of FSW-ed blanks was compared to the one exhibited by the base material in order to evaluate the quality of the welded joints.

Dynamic Mechanical Measurements of Epoxy Matrix-Silica Nanocomposites II

2009

The mechanical properties of epoxy-silica nanocomposites have been studied; the silica nanosphere fillers used were un-functionalised, functionalised with amine, with epoxy, or a mixture of both kinds. Dynamic mechanical analysis measurements revealed an increase in the shear storage modulus, for all samples with a filler content of 3–5%. Improvements were observed in the glassy and rubbery states, without affecting the glass transition temperature of the materials. Above these strengthening percentages, the mechanical properties began to deteriorate, but in all cases they remained superior to those of the pristine epoxy resin. For low strengthening percentages, samples reinforced with bot…

Computer simulation of metal flow in the hot upsetting of a high-strength aluminium alloy

1993

Abstract The effects of metal-working temperature on the hot axisymmetric upsetting of AA 7012 aluminium alloy were investigated in the temperature range of from 250 to 400°C, at a strain rate of 4 s −1 . The material behaviour was studied by means of simulative methods based on the analysis of torsion-test results which have shown that when the strain increases, the flow stress increases to a peak value and then decreases to a fracture value. Furthermore, the flow stress decreases with decreasing strain rate and with increasing temperature. Constitutive equations, describing accurately the hot deformation behaviour of the material, were defined and used subsequently in a numerical model th…

Assessment of material models through simple machining tests

2008

The accuracy of the results obtained from FEM simulation of machining operations depends on the accuracy of input data. Among these, the flow stress data of the workpiece are extremely important together with the friction along the tool-chip interface. In this study, an identification procedure for the determination of material parameters that are used for the FEM simulation of machining processes is proposed. The procedure is based on the coupling of a numerical identification procedure and Arbitrarian Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) Finite Element simulations of turning operations. An experimental campaign was developed in order to calibrate the model and to validate the procedure. The basic id…

Powder metallurgy processing and deformation characteristics of bulk multimodal nickel

2014

cited By 7; International audience; Spark plasma sintering was used to process bulk nickel samples from a blend of three powder types. The resulting multimodal microstructure was made of coarse (average size ∼ 135 μm) spherical microcrystalline entities (the core) surrounded by a fine-grained matrix (average grain size ∼ 1.5 μm) or a thick rim (the shell) distinguishable from the matrix. Tensile tests revealed yield strength of ∼ 470 MPa that was accompanied by limited ductility (∼ 2.8% plastic strain). Microstructure observation after testing showed debonding at interfaces between the matrix and the coarse entities, but in many instances, shallow dimples within the rim were observed indica…

Effects of particle clustering on the plastic deformation and damage initiation of particulate reinforced composite utilizing X-ray CT data and finit…

2018

In this paper, a new simulation technique which can include microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites is proposed to accurately study deformation pattern and damage mechanism in these composites. Three dimensional microstructures constructed from XCT images incorporated into finite element modeling codes with minimal approximation to capture the effects of cluster size, local volume fraction of particles in the cluster and the distance between clusters as relevant statistical quantities describing the microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites. A quantitative parameter as degree of clustering is defined to consider particle clustering effect.…

Orthogonal cutting simulation of OFHC copper using a new constitutive model considering the state of stress and the microstructure effects

2016

International audience; This work aims to develop an orthogonal cutting model for surface integrity prediction, which incorporates a new constitutive model of Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper. It accounts for the effects of the state of stress on the flow stress evolution up to fracture. Moreover, since surface integrity parameters are sensitive to the microstructure of the work material, this constitutive model highlights also the recrystallization effects on the flow stress. Orthogonal cutting model is validated using experimental designed cutting tests. More accurate predictions were obtained using this new constitutive model comparing to the classical Johnson-Cook model.

Tribology of Metal Cutting

2008

This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding tribological behaviour of the cutting zone and characterizes specific features of the tool–chip contact that influence friction mechanisms in this area. Adhesion, plastic deformation of contacting asperities and ploughing action of the cutting edge are selected as three predominant mechanisms controlling sliding friction between the tool and the chip. The two-zone model of the tool–chip contact distinguishing seizure and sliding regions is characterized, along with experimental evidence based on photoelastic and material flow line techniques. Corresponding stress distributions for plane and restricted-contact cutting tools are provided…
